EMBODIED MINDFULNESS: be the Boss

Mindfulness of body sensation holds the key to undoing strong emotion.

  • Recognise the body’s specific response to emotional distress.

  • Cultivate the right mindful strategies.

  • Learn skills that don't amp you up or add to the load.

When you're going through a rough patch

It’s no use teetering around on high heels or tiptoeing barefoot through the bindiis.

It’s no use charging through eyes-closed, fists clenched, either.

Let’s pull on our big-girls' bloomers and get down to work.

It’s a lot more pleasant and doable than you think!

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Embodied Emotions course, Kyogle 2020

Anne C.

Attending to body sensations firstly, then allowing them and not resisting them gave me immense relief. Previously I’d thought that difficult emotions needed to be avoided (and it is wonderful that sensations themselves do pass!) Now I realise that denying my difficult emotions through fear, and having no useful tools to deal with them, had compounded the problem.

Life changing!

Eliza S

Learning to listen to (and trust) body sensations has been life changing, as has becoming an observer of my feelings and thoughts. Under stress I used to freeze, and it just felt like I had no clue how to react. Now I can take my attention to whatever sensation is noticeable, I watch sensations and thoughts come and go. I’ve connected to the core part of me that is bigger than these. The embodied mindfulness methods are now part of how I am in the world, tools I use every day. Like riding a bike, once I got it, I got it. Shakti has equipped me with skills that now seem indispensable.

The body is always involved in emotion.

Strong emotions have a real physical impact. Visceral. We feel "tied up in knots" ... "flattened" ... "sick to the stomach".

Or perhaps butterflies in the stomach, or a soft longing ache in the heart.

Physical sensation and emotion go together. In one package.

A package we can unpack.

Coz mindfulness is not just about being present.

It’s a tool to leverage emotional challenges.

Undo the knots. Loosen the binds.

What plays in the mind plays in the body

Distress sensations in the body drive our reactions.

Emotional stress fuels our urgency, despair, indignation, feeling wronged, wanting revenge.

The longer physical sensations are ignored, the more emotions go into overdrive.

Unknowingly we hype up the situation and add to our load.

To have an easier time with emotions we need to start with the body.

It’s very possible and doable.

It’s just that you haven’t learned how.

Yet.
